April 2024

Celebrate National Garden Month at PWCS with PWCS Tower Gardens!

Education using gardens brings food and nutrition to life! From science to math to economics and literature, gardens are an excellent way to provide hands-on education to help students learn about where their food comes from! April is National Garden Month, so what better time to introduce garden education into your classroom or at home?! The PWCS Food and Nutrition Department recognizes the importance of educating students about Farm-to-School and its components such as agricultural practices, life cycles of plants, harvesting, and food preparation. To support this effort, PWCS Nutrition coordinates and supports the integration of garden-enhanced education using Aeroponic Tower Garden Growing Systems at PWCS schools across the Division. There are currently 55 Tower Gardens providing education at PWCS schools! Are you interested in having a Tower Garden at your school? Reach out to Meghan Leineweber at [email protected] to learn more. There are currently a couple more Tower Gardens in need of a school home!

There are many garden education lessons that can be used in conjunction with an outdoor garden, tower garden, or even just a small pot with soil in a sunny window! Get inspired this garden season with these curriculum-aligned lessons from Virginia Ag in the Classroom, Tower Garen, and FoodCorps!
