Welcome to 8th Grade Language Arts! I am super excited to be joining the Pennington staff as I enter my seventeenth year of teaching for Prince William County.  This is an important SOL year for reading and writing, so I will be doing everything possible to ready students for these assessments, but we will be working beyond these benchmarks as well, so that our Pennington students will be ready for the rigors of high school course work. So far I have been impressed with the quality thinking of our Pennington students, and I look forward to a great year.

Boyle Grade 8 Language Arts Instructional Document - new March 25!

New documents have been added in the files section to assist students in continuing their learning starting April 14, 2020. Please check out the optional activities suggested for either regular or extended language arts labeled for week one. Remember that the actual documents to submit for teacher feedback may be accessed through Teams, which is a part of your office 365 account, but full instructions are also found here.  Fridays will continue to be an excellent day to work on skill building activities in Study Island and Brain Pop, so please check those for recommended assignments each week as well.

During our Language Arts time on Friday, April 17, whether you are in regular or extended, please work on the newly posted Study Island assignment labeled "Text Structure" which has three parts to it. The assignment can be done any time over the next week. Please also visit Brain Pop to watch the video on Plagiarism assigned previously. All items are optional, but they all have value in preparing you for high school!

Activities for Week 2, April 20-24, are now posted in my files. Our focus is on non-fiction text and the topic is HAPPINESS! Don't forget to submit your response document in TEAMS. New Study Island assignments will be posted on Friday!

Activities for Week 3, April 27-May 1, are now posted in my files. Our focus is on non-fiction text and the topic is SUCCESS! Actually, it is on how failure can lead to success. You may submit your response to the article on Michael Jordan through TEAMS. I have also assigned a BrainPOP video and quiz on critical reasoning, to help you improve your persuasive arguments and also allow you to better critique the arguments of others. New Study Island assignments will be posted on Friday! Keep reading your novels so you can participate in book discussions next week!

Activities for Week 4, May 4-8, will not be found in the files section because this week I am hosting live meetings centered around the novels we have been reading.

4th period will meet from 12:00 to 12:30 and 5th will meet from 12:30 to 1:00 on May 5 to discuss The Giver.  Join the meeting through TEAMS. A notice has been sent to your calendar with the link to join or you can go directly to your class page to join.

1st period will meet from 12:00 to 12:30 and 2nd will meet from 12:30 to 1:00 on May 6 to discuss The Pearl.  Join the meeting through TEAMS. A notice has been sent to your calendar with the link to join or you can go directly to your class page to join.

Please have a few passages marked that you would like to bring up during discussion.

On Friday, May 8, I will be hosting a Zoom meeting from 12:00 to 12:45 for any student who has read something they enjoyed these past weeks and would like to share a little about it in an informal book talk. This is open to all students of any period. If you would like to participate, please email me by 3 pm on Thursday so I can send you the zoom link. Otherwise, please keep working on your Study Island and Brain Pop assignments.

Activities for Week 5, May 11-15, along with all supporting documents, have been added to my files section. The response document is located in TEAMS and should be submitted there. This week's assignment is a little longer, so there will be no new Study Island assignments to allow extra time on the reading and writing activities. Our focus is poetry, and there is an extra writing challenge for extended students that can be sent to my email. Have fun!

Activities for Week 6, May 18-22, have been added to my files section. The response document is located in Teams and should be submitted there. I will be adding new Study Island assignments on fiction by Friday for you to complete as you are able. Above all else, I encourage you to read. If you would like to participate in our next book club on The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, please email me by Friday, May 22 so that I may send you the zoom link.  The meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 27 at 12 pm.

Activities for Week 7, May 26-29, have been added to my files section. Haiku will be submitted in TEAMS. The book club for The Outsiders will be Wednesday, May 27 from 12-1 pm, but you must email me no later than 3 pm May 26 to participate. There are no new Study Island assignments this week, but please feel free to work on any you missed from the previous weeks. As always, I encourage you to READ, READ. READ!

Activities for Week 8, June 1-5, are available in my files section. You can share your thoughts on the article "Instapoets and Bards of Youtube" by posting a comment on the article in TEAMS. On Tuesday, June 2, I will be hosting a TEAMS live meeting for regular language arts students at 12:00 for period 4 and 12:30 for period 5.  On June 3, I will be holding a TEAMS live meeting for extended language arts students at 12:00 for period 1 and 12:30 for period 2. Pop in to share what you are reading or to just say "hello". At 12:30 students who read The Outsiders will also have a final book chat through the period 2 TEAMS meeting. Students not in period 2 who are participating will receive an invitation to join through TEAMS. Friday is the 8th grade awards ceremony at 3pm, so no new Study Islands have been assigned, but you may work on previous ones. Monday, June 8 will be the last day to receive teacher feedback on any shared assignments. I wish you all a wonderful summer and the best of luck as you move on to high school in the fall!

Don't forget to check out the Pennington Library page for great ideas to enhance your summer reading!!!
